It's a working contemporary art gallery tucked into stone vaults that feel nothing like your typical white-walled exhibition space. The low ceilings and arched walls create something genuinely atmospheric; there's real drama to seeing modern art framed by medieval masonry.

You'll find rotating exhibitions here, usually work by emerging and established artists. The scale is intimate - you're not wandering for hours. Thirty minutes to an hour does it unless you're genuinely keen on whatever's showing. Art lovers will appreciate the unexpected venue more than casual browsers. Kids might find the dungeon-like setting fun for five minutes, but there's not much to keep them engaged unless the exhibition is hands-on.

It's free or donation-based (opening hours and current fees worth checking ahead), and it makes a decent cultural pause if you're staying at Three Ponds Holiday Park down the road. Newhaven itself isn't the South Coast's most glamorous spot - it's a working port town - but that's partly the charm. The Crypt Gallery feels genuine because it's not trying to be twee or tourist-y.
