Crungie Clach

The walk up Crungie Clach from Pitlochry isn't long, but it punches well above its weight. You're looking at roughly an hour to the summit if you're reasonably fit, and the reward is a proper viewpoint across Perthshire that catches most people off guard.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical scramble. The path is well-trodden and the gradient, while steady, never becomes brutal. What makes it worthwhile is how quickly the landscape spreads below you - Loch Dunmore sits right there, and on a clear day you can pick out the larger peaks in the distance. The summit itself is modest but genuine, with enough of a platform to sit down and actually see something.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's ideal if you've got an afternoon free and don't fancy committing to anything longer. Kids can manage it without complaint, though under-tens might need encouragement on the final push. If the weather's turned rough, skip it - there's little shelter and the whole point evaporates in cloud.

Being just outside Pitlochry makes this a natural addition to a caravan park stay. Faskally Woods Holiday Park sits within spitting distance, and Milton Of Fonab Caravan Park is barely further - both make good bases for exploring the area. Do Crungie Clach in the morning, then tackle something else in the afternoon. The walk costs nothing and takes no booking. Go when the light's good; the pine forest looks better in late afternoon.
