Crucible

The Crucible sits right in Sheffield city centre, and it's one of those venues that surprises you with how much is actually going on inside. It's part theatre, part gallery, part creative workshop space - the sort of place where you might catch a contemporary art exhibition one day and stumble into a live performance the next. The building itself, all brutalist concrete and glass, looks a bit stern from the outside, but walk in and it opens up properly.

The gallery spaces are genuinely worth an hour or two of your time. They rotate exhibitions regularly, so there's usually something fresh on, ranging from visual art installations to photography to interactive pieces that actually engage rather than just exist. If you're camping at Wyming Brook Farm (which has a perfect rating, so it's worth the drive) or East Peak, you're only a short trip into the city.

It's free to wander the galleries, which is brilliant, though specific exhibitions or theatre performances will cost you - check ahead because programmes change. Families with teenagers will get more from it than younger kids, honestly. Anyone interested in contemporary art or live performance should absolutely factor this in. The real joy is that you don't have to commit to a full show; you can just pop in, have a look round the current exhibition, grab a coffee, and head back out. It's also walkable from most of Sheffield's city centre, so easy to combine with lunch or exploring the cutlery quarter nearby. Allow at least 90 minutes if you're doing it properly.
