Cruach nam Fiadh

The walk up Cruach nam Fiadh near Tarbert is steep, sweaty, and absolutely worth the effort. This isn't a casual stroll - it's a proper hill climb with real views at the top that justify every aching leg muscle. From the summit you get sight lines across the Kintyre peninsula and down toward the Clyde, the kind of panorama that makes you forget you're only dealing with a modest Argyll peak.

It's a solid afternoon outing for anyone who doesn't mind a bit of graft. Experienced walkers will knock it out in a couple of hours, while families with younger kids might want to pace themselves and bring more water than you'd think necessary. The terrain is rough in places - it's proper hillwalking, not a forestry track - so decent boots matter. Start early if you can, especially on weekends when locals know to head out here.

Tarbert itself is the jumping-off point, a small working port town with some decent cafes and shops if you want to grab supplies before heading out. The whole area works well if you're basing yourself at Tarbert Holiday Park, which sits just outside town and gives you easy access to both this walk and the broader Kintyre countryside. Free to climb, obviously - it's a hill. Allow three hours return if you're taking your time, two if you're moving briskly.
