Cruach Maolachy

The walk up Cruach Maolachy from Taynuilt is properly rewarding - not too taxing, but steep enough to feel like you've earned the views. This 884-metre peak sits above Loch Awe, and on a clear day the vistas stretch across the water towards Ben Cruachan. The route itself is straightforward: park near Taynuilt and head for the obvious ridge. Takes about two hours there and back if you're moving at a decent pace.

It's a hill walkers' hill rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. No visitor centre, no café, just you and the Scottish landscape. That's partly its charm. On a weekday you might have it to yourself, which makes the moment you reach the top feel genuinely special. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it without drama - the path is clear and the scrambling minimal.

What makes it work is the location. Loch Awe dominates the view, and you're close enough to see the dramatic bulk of Ben Cruachan across the water. Weather matters more than most peaks - low cloud renders it pointless, so pick your day.
