Croxley Lake

The water here is deceptively still - that glassy surface masks just how popular Croxley Lake has become with walkers and anglers alike. It's a proper local spot near Rickmansworth, the sort of place where you'll see families feeding ducks on a weekend and serious fishermen setting up before dawn. The lake itself isn't vast, but the walk around it is pleasant enough - takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace - and the path keeps you close to the water's edge.

What you get is genuine countryside without the tourist crowds. The surrounding parkland has that English green-belt feel: a bit of open grass, some mature trees, and the kind of peace that makes you wonder why you don't come out here more often. It's free to access and there are no gates, so you can turn up whenever suits you. Early mornings are best if you want to avoid the lunchtime surge.

Families with young kids will manage the walk without complaint, though there's nothing here to occupy them beyond the usual lake watching. Keen walkers might find it a bit tame as a standalone destination - it works better as part of a wider ramble through the area. If you're staying at Highclere Caravan and Camping Park just five miles away, it's absolutely worth the short drive for a morning or afternoon. Bring proper shoes though - the path gets muddy after rain and the banks can be slippery.
