Croft Pool

The water at Croft Pool catches you straight away - it's surprisingly clean and well-kept for what amounts to a working fishing lake just outside Retford. This isn't a tourist attraction in the grand sense; it's a proper local spot where anglers come for pike, perch and roach, and families pop by for a walk round the banks on a Sunday afternoon.

You can circuit the whole thing in about 20 minutes if you're not stopping to watch the water, longer if you settle on one of the benches and actually take in the quiet. There's something pleasantly unpolished about it - no visitor centre, no gift shop, no staged photo opportunities. Just a lake, some overhanging trees, and the occasional splash of a fish. Walkers heading between Retford and the wider countryside will find it a gentle addition to a loop, though it won't hold your attention for hours unless you're keen on fishing or genuinely into spotting wildlife.

Families with young kids might manage 30 minutes before restlessness sets in. It's free to walk around, which is the main thing. The real pull is combining it with stays at nearby parks like Hallcroft Fishery or Olive Tree Caravan Park - both within easy reach - and using Croft Pool as part of a quieter day out. Clumber Park Caravan Site is further afield at nearly six miles, but if you're staying there, you've got bigger estates to explore anyway. Come here to decompress rather than to be impressed.
