Càrn na Doire

The walk up Càrn na Doire isn't long, but it's steep enough to make your legs complain for the first half hour. Once you've hauled yourself to the 709-metre summit near Grantown-on-Spey, you're rewarded with views across the Spey Valley that make the huffing worthwhile. On a clear day the Cairngorms dominate the horizon - properly impressive. The route itself is straightforward: moorland and heather, the kind of walking that makes you feel like you've earned your leg stretch without needing mountaineering experience. Allow two to three hours return from the car park. It's free, obviously. Families with kids aged ten and up will manage it fine. Younger ones might find the gradient tedious on the way up, though the summit is spectacular enough to distract from tired legs. This is solid territory for hill-walkers wanting something achievable rather than a full-day expedition. If you're staying at Grantown on Spey Caravan Park just down the road, it's an ideal half-day option. The nearby Cairngorms National Park has proper trails for when you want something more serious. The views from the top genuinely do shift with weather and season - worth revisiting in different conditions. Late afternoon light is particularly good if you've got the energy for an after-tea climb.
