Càrn Luig

The walk up Càrn Luig starts gentle enough, but don't let that fool you - it's a proper hill, this one. You're looking at around 800 metres of elevation gain from Grantown-on-Spey, and the final push through heather and stone can leave your legs reminding you about it for days. That said, the views across the Cairngorms plateau make every heavy step worthwhile. On a clear day you can see for miles - Ben Rinnes, the Braes of Glenlivet, the whole sweep of Highland landscape rolling out beneath your feet.

It's the sort of walk that rewards hill walkers rather than casual strollers. You'll need proper boots, a map, and respect for Scottish mountain weather - conditions change fast up here. Allow a solid four to five hours for the round trip, depending on your fitness. There's no facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and snacks.
