Càrn Gorm

Cairn Gorm itself is less a single dramatic peak and more a sprawling mountain massif that dominates the view from Beauly and beyond. At 1245 metres, it's the sort of hill that doesn't announce itself with one sharp summit but rather a broad plateau - which actually makes it brilliant for walkers who aren't mountaineers.

The approach varies depending which way you tackle it. Most people head up from the ski area on the opposite side, but if you're staying near Beauly and want something more interesting than a tourist-heavy slog, the longer routes from Glen Affric have proper character. You'll see Caledonian pine forest, lochs that actually take your breath away, and on a clear day the Cairngorms sprawl before you in their full moody glory.

It's a serious day out - allow six to eight hours depending on your fitness and the route. The weather can turn vicious in minutes, so this isn't for casual strollers. Winter transforms it entirely; the ski infrastructure brings crowds but the mountain itself remains unforgiving.

Stay at Cannich Woodland Camping and Caravan Park nearby and you're well-positioned for exploring this corner of the Highlands. It's two and a half miles from Beauly, so reasonable access to supplies, but close enough to the mountain to make the drive worthwhile. The plateau offers grand views across the Cairngorms themselves, though you pay for them with exposure and effort. Worth it if you're a proper walker.
