Càrn Fiaclach

The walk up Càrn Fiaclach isn't long, but it packs a proper punch. Rising just shy of 600 metres above Beauly, this peak commands views across the Highlands that feel genuinely wild - the kind of place where you remember why you came north in the first place.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical scramble. Most people tackle it in under three hours return, which makes it ideal if you're based at Cannich Woodland Camping a few miles south and want something with real teeth but won't eat your whole afternoon. The approach is manageable for anyone with decent legs and reasonable fitness - nothing technical, just relentless gradient in places.

What you get for your effort matters. On a clear day the views stretch properly far. You're looking out towards the central Highlands with Ben Wyvis prominent on the horizon, and the glens below show their bones in a way that makes the climb worthwhile. On a grey day it's atmospheric rather than spectacular - Scottish mountain weather being what it is.

This works best for walkers who want a real hill without the commitment of a full day expedition. It's not a tourist stroll, but it's not a mountaineer's project either. Families with older kids who can manage sustained walking will find it rewarding. The peak itself is exposed, so wind can be brutal even when the valley feels calm - check conditions before you go.

Head out early. The carpark fills on weekends, and you'll want good light for the descent.
