Càrn Fhradhairc

The walk up Càrn Fhradhairc isn't long, but it's properly steep in places - the kind of climb that has you breathing hard within twenty minutes. From Grantown-on-Spey, you're looking at a decent trek to the trailhead, but once you're up there the views across the Cairngorms are genuinely excellent.

This is a hill for people who want proper scenery without committing to a full day's mountaineering. The summit sits at just over 600 metres and the terrain is mixed - some boggy sections, a bit of heather, and enough exposed rock to feel like you've actually achieved something. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a murky one, you're stumbling about in mist wondering why you didn't check the forecast.

It's best tackled by walkers with decent fitness rather than families with small children - the ascent is relentless in stretches and there's not much of interest at the bottom to occupy anyone who gets bored. Allow a solid three hours for the round trip if you're reasonably fit. Early morning departures work well; the midges can be fierce in summer afternoons.

If you're staying at Grantown on Spey Caravan Park, this makes a cracking half-day outing that won't eat into your entire holiday. Pair it with exploring Grantown's town centre or pushing further into the Cairngorms National Park proper. The hill itself is free - there's no gate, no visitor centre, just you and the Scottish hills. That's rather the point.
