Creag Nay

A modest hill rather than a serious mountain, Creag Nay rises above the glens near Drumnadrochit with views that punch well above its weight. The walk up takes about ninety minutes at a steady pace - nothing technical, just good honest Scottish hill-walking with proper reward at the top.

You get proper Highland views from the summit: Loch Ness sprawls out one direction, and on a clear day the Cairngorms catch the light to the south. The path itself is rough in places but never difficult, making it ideal for anyone who wants the satisfaction of a peak without the scrambling or exposure. The surrounding moorland is quiet - you won't fight crowds here like you do at the honeypot routes round Glen Affric.

This works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're based at one of the glamping sites nearby - Loch Ness Glamping or Highland Premier are both close enough for an early start. Family groups with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine; the views keep everyone motivated. Allow three hours total with a break on top.

Free, obviously. No facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and something to eat. Go when the midges are dormant - autumn or early spring are your best bets. If the weather turns properly foul the views vanish entirely, so timing matters. It's not a must-do, but if you're staying in the area and fancy a decent walk without the effort of Ben Wyvis or the Affric peaks, Creag Nay delivers.
