Creag Martach

The walk up Creag Martach isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind you why you should've done more hill training. Starting from near Pitlochry, you're looking at a proper workout in under two hours - the sort of climb where you're grateful for every breather and genuinely pleased when you reach the summit.

What you get at the top is genuinely impressive. The views sweep across Perthshire in all directions, and on a clear day you can see for miles. It's the kind of vantage point that makes sense of why it was worth the leg work.

This is a walker's hill rather than a casual stroll, so families with younger kids might find it a bit much, but teenagers who've done a few Munros before will manage fine. The terrain is straightforward enough - no scrambling or technical bits - just a relentless gradient. Allow a good three hours if you're taking your time and stopping to catch your breath.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Grandtully Station or Inver Mill Farm are both close by - this makes a solid morning's activity before heading back for lunch. It's the sort of hill that works well alongside Pitlochry's other attractions rather than being a day's focus on its own. Free to walk, naturally, and there's no specific season that's better than others, though you'll want decent visibility for those views to count.
