Creag a'Bharrain

You'll spot Creag a'Bharrain rising up from the moorland south of Grantown-on-Spey - it's that distinctive rocky outcrop that catches your eye from the main road. The walk itself is straightforward, taking around two hours there and back, and you're rewarded with proper Highland views across the Spey valley without needing to bag a full 3000-footer.

It's a cracking spot for families who've got kids keen on mountains but not ready for the big slog. Walkers doing a longer route through the area often tack it on. The path is clear enough, though muddy in places after rain - standard moorland fare. The summit's modest in height but the sense of exposure is real, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Cairngorms.

Worth doing on a dry morning when the light's proper good. Don't bother if the cloud's down - you'll see nothing but mist and heather. Allow a good chunk of the day if you're not particularly fit, and bring decent boots.

If you're based at Grantown on Spey Caravan Park, this works as an excellent half-day excursion alongside other local walks. The town itself is only six miles away, so you've got somewhere to grab breakfast or a late lunch afterwards. The climb's steep enough to feel like you've done something, but short enough that you won't spend your whole holiday recovering.
