The first thing that hits you at Crate is the sheer scale of the brewing operation - massive steel tanks visible right from the entrance, turning what could be a standard brewery tap into something genuinely industrial and impressive. Located in Walthamstow, this is proper East London: graffitied railway arches, stripped-back concrete, the works.

You're there ostensibly to drink the beer, and they do a solid rotating selection of their own brews alongside guest taps. But honestly, the pizza is why many people make the trip. Wood-fired oven, properly done bases, decent toppings - it's not fancy, but it delivers. The space itself is cavernous and a bit loud when it's busy, which is most weekends.

Works best for groups of friends or couples after a few hours in the area. Families with young kids will find it manageable earlier in the evening, though it's not purpose-built for them. Solo drinkers can perch at the bar and watch the action. Thursday to Sunday evenings are when the place really hums - Friday and Saturday it gets rammed.

It's free to walk in and grab a drink or food. No entry fee. Allow an hour minimum if you're just popping for a pint, longer if you're eating. Given Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park is only a few miles away in Edmonton, this makes a decent evening detour if you're staying in the area. Worth the visit, though don't expect boutique brewery vibes - this is functional and buzzy, which is exactly the point.
