Crarae Garden Visitor Centre

The visitor centre at Crarae Garden sits just outside Inveraray, serving as the gateway to one of Scotland's finest woodland gardens. It's a National Trust for Scotland property, and the centre itself is modest - mostly practical facilities rather than a grand display space - but what matters is what lies beyond: 50 acres of mountainside planted with rhododendrons, azaleas, conifers and specimen trees that'll stop you mid-walk regardless of the season.

You can easily spend two to three hours here if you're actually walking the grounds, though some visitors knock it over in 90 minutes if they're not stopping constantly to photograph things. The steep paths mean it's more suited to walkers than casual strollers, and older kids will manage fine, though toddlers in buggies will struggle. The real character comes from the plantings themselves - there's real expertise in how these woods have been layered over decades.

Free entry if you're an NTS member; otherwise there's a small charge. Spring's obviously peak time for the flowering plants, but autumn colour is underrated. Summer can feel a bit green and samey unless you're into foliage for its own sake.

If you're based at Fyne Glamping or Strathlachlan Caravan Park - both within a couple of miles - this works perfectly as a morning or afternoon activity that doesn't demand the full day. It pairs well with exploring Inveraray itself or combining with other Cowal Peninsula walks. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the detour if you're in Argyll.
