Crannog

A crannog is essentially a prehistoric dwelling built on an artificial island, and the one here in South Lanarkshire is genuinely fascinating if you're into archaeology. You're looking at the remains of an Iron Age settlement - basically a platform of timber and stone constructed right in the water, probably for defence and practical reasons both. The site itself is fairly understated. There's no flashy visitor centre or reconstructed village, just the archaeological evidence laid out where it was found, which honestly is more compelling if you know what you're looking at.

History enthusiasts will find this properly absorbing. Families with older kids interested in ancient Britain might appreciate it, though younger ones could get restless since there's no hands-on element. You'll want to allow 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how deep you want to read into the interpretation. The nearest proper town is Lanark itself, which is handy for supplies and a decent spot for lunch. If you're staying at Ecosse Glamping nearby - just over five miles away - this makes for an excellent morning visit before heading off to explore the Falls of Clyde or other Lanarkshire attractions.

Go on a clear day if possible. The site can feel exposed in wet weather, and you'll want decent visibility to properly understand the layout. It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity rather than offering instant gratification.
