Crannog

Out on the loch near Lochwinnoch sits the remains of a crannog - an Iron Age dwelling that once floated on the water. It's basically a circular platform of timber and stone, now submerged but visible as a dark patch if you know where to look. You won't find much in the way of signage or infrastructure here; this is proper archaeology rather than a visitor attraction with facilities.

The crannog itself is accessible from the lochside, though you'll need to work out the approach yourself as there's no formal path. Bring binoculars if you're serious about making out the structure - from a distance it reads more as a vague underwater hump than a dramatic ruin. History enthusiasts will find the concept fascinating: Iron Age people built these things as defensive settlements or storage areas, and the loch water has preserved the timbers beautifully for thousands of years. Kids might struggle to see the appeal unless they're already into archaeology.

It works well as a stop if you're already walking round Lochwinnoch's nature reserve or staying at The Pods at Auchenhean nearby. Give yourself twenty minutes on site, though you could spend longer photographing or sitting by the water. There's no charge for looking, and no facilities to speak of. Best visited on a calm day when the water's clear - rough conditions and murky water make spotting it nigh impossible. Real appeal here is the knowledge of what you're looking at rather than the visual drama.
