Crakehall Church

The church sits quietly in the village of Crakehall, a few miles south of Northallerton, and it's one of those places that rewards you for taking the backroad. What strikes you first is how genuinely medieval it feels - not restored to within an inch of its life, but honest. The chancel dates back to the 13th century, which means people have been worshipping in roughly this spot for 800 years.

Inside, there's genuine character. You'll find a proper Norman font, some decent medieval stonework, and that particular smell of old wood and stone that you either love or find a bit melancholy. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Pembroke is particularly close at 2.5 miles - it makes a decent walk, especially combined with exploring the village itself. Kiplin Country Park is only a bit further out if you want something with more facilities for a longer day.
