Craigie Cross

The wetland at Craigie Cross, just outside Perth, is one of those places that looks modest on the map but rewards anyone who actually bothers to turn up. A modest stretch of water and surrounding marshland, it's become something of a haven for birdwatchers and anyone keen on spotting wildlife without the faffing about required at bigger nature reserves.

Walking the perimeter takes roughly 45 minutes if you move steadily, though most people potter about for longer, stopping to crane their necks at whatever's nesting or feeding that day. Winter brings visiting wildfowl; spring gets loud with breeding birds. The water itself is calm, reflective, genuinely pleasant to stand beside.

It's free, obviously, and open whenever you can get there. No facilities worth mentioning, so bring your own water and dress for Scottish weather that changes its mind every ten minutes. Families with young kids might find the lack of paths a bit limiting - it's not a push-chair-friendly setup - but anyone over walking age and interested in nature will have a solid couple of hours here.

If you're based at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road, you could do Craigie Cross as a morning outing before driving into Perth proper. It's not dramatic or particularly Instagram-friendly, which is precisely why it works. No crowds, just birds and the occasional person quietly minding their own business with binoculars.
