Craigie

The earthworks at Craigie, just outside Perth, are genuinely modest - we're talking overgrown lumps and bumps in a field rather than anything that'll make you gasp. But if you're into Iron Age settlements and don't mind squinting at the landscape, there's something rather satisfying about standing where people actually lived two thousand years ago.

You'll find the remains of what was likely a fortified settlement, though the stone has long gone and nature's reclaimed most of it. The site's access can be tricky depending on the season and farming activity, so it's worth ringing ahead or asking locally in Perth first. Archaeological types will get more from it than casual visitors, honestly. Kids might manage ten minutes before asking if there's anything else to do.

If you're camping at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site - genuinely one of the better spots in the area with its 5-star rating - Craigie makes an easy morning detour. It's only three miles away, so you could combine it with a proper walk through the grounds at nearby Scone Palace if you want something with actual crowds and gift shops. Perth Caravan Park is closer but the ratings suggest Scone's the smarter choice.

Go if you're a dedicated Iron Age enthusiast or have a real interest in Tayside's archaeological layers. Skip it if you're after drama or anything Instagram-worthy. It's free, and you'll spend longer looking at it than you should.
