Craigencrosh Hill

The walk up Craigencrosh Hill takes about forty minutes from the carpark, and it's a proper slog in places - steep enough that you'll feel it in your calves, but nothing that requires climbing gear. What makes it worth the effort is the view once you're up there. You get the whole sweep of Luce Bay spread out below, and on a clear day the Isle of Man sits on the horizon like someone's left it there by accident.

It's the sort of hill that suits walkers more than families with small children - the path gets muddy and loose underfoot, and there's not much to distract bored kids along the way. But if you're the type who enjoys a bracing Scottish hillwalk without the three-hour slog of something bigger, this hits the spot. The summit itself is unmarked, which somehow feels more authentic than the cairn-topped peaks further north.

Stranraer sits just a few miles away, so you could combine this with a wander round the town's waterfront if you've got an afternoon to kill. If you're staying at Sands of Luce Holiday Park - less than two miles off - it's a genuinely good way to work off a cooked breakfast. Allow a couple of hours return including a proper sit-down at the top with a thermos. Free to visit, obviously, being a hill.
