Craigen Hill

The walk up Craigen Hill rewards you with views across South Lanarkshire that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's not a brutal slog - the summit sits at just over 300 metres - but the climb is steady and the path can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter.

From the top you're looking out across the Lowlands with the Clyde Valley falling away below. On a decent morning, it's genuinely excellent. The hill itself feels quiet most days, which is partly why it's worth the effort. You won't fight crowds at the summit.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's a solid two-hour round trip if you're not hanging about, manageable for families with older kids but probably too much for little ones. There's nothing at the peak itself - no café, no facilities - just the view and the wind and the satisfaction of having climbed something.

Lanark sits just down the road, so you can combine this with a wander round the town or a visit to nearby attractions in the area. If you're staying at Ecosse Glamping, about three miles away, this makes a proper morning out before you settle back for lunch. It's the sort of walk that doesn't take all day but leaves you feeling like you've actually done something, which is exactly what you want from a Lowlands hill.
