The path isn't technical, just relentless uphill, so decent boots help but aren't essential. The park's well-situated for tackling Craigdasher as a morning outing before heading elsewhere - it's the sort of hill that works best early in the day when the light's good and you're fresh. The Dumfries area itself has plenty of other walking options if you're planning a proper week outdoors, so this doesn't feel like a wasted trip if the weather turns fickle.
