Craig Vallich

The walk up Craig Vallich from Ballater isn't long, but it's steep enough to earn the views properly. You're climbing open moorland with the Dee Valley spreading out below - it's the kind of summit that feels bigger than its height suggests, especially if the light's right in the late afternoon.

This is proper walking terrain, not a casual stroll. The path kicks up quickly through heather and granite, and you'll feel it in your legs on the way back down. Allow a couple of hours there and back, maybe a bit more if you're taking photos or stopping for breath. The best thing about it is how quickly you're away from Ballater itself - within twenty minutes you could be alone on the hill, which is rare this close to a town.

Historic types might note it's working landscape rather than ancient site, but walkers get the most from it. Kids will manage the ascent if they're decent hikers, though the steep bits aren't fun if anyone's flagging. Families based at Ballater Caravan Park or Howe of Torbeg will find it a solid half-day that justifies the drive and doesn't demand a full day's commitment.

Weather matters here - mist rolls in fast off the Cairngorms, and the ground's boggy in places. Good boots are essential. Go in decent visibility if you can, or you'll spend the summit staring at clouds that could be anywhere. It's free, obviously, and open whenever you fancy it.
