Craig Elvis

Craig Elvis is a rocky outcrop on the hills above Aberystwyth that marks an old stronghold - nothing grand, mind you, just a crag with historical weight to it. The name comes from the medieval period, and while there's not much left standing today, the site itself rewards the walk up. You get proper views across Cardigan Bay and down towards the town, which alone makes the effort worthwhile.

It's the kind of place that appeals to local history buffs and walkers who want something with a bit more substance than a roadside marker. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of a climb will get something from it, though younger ones might find the ruins a touch underwhelming - there's not really anything to clamber on or poke about in. The walk itself is the main event, to be honest. Allow yourself an hour or so if you're coming from Aberystwyth itself.

You won't find facilities up there, so bring water and wear decent boots if you're planning to explore properly. Timing-wise, clear weather makes the views sing; a misty day and you might wonder why you bothered. It works well as part of a wider ramble around the hills, or as a brief detour if you're based at one of the nearby campsites like Forester's Retreat Glamping or Tyn Ffordd Fach. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a walking holiday in Ceredigion.
