About Craig Cae-Rhedyn
What you get for the effort is expansive. On a clear day you're looking at the Cader Idris massif rising to the south and the Aran range beyond. The actual summit is a bit of an anticlimax - no trig point, just moorland becoming slightly higher moorland - but the views from the ridge either side of it make up for it. Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here, especially those who've had their fill of the crowds elsewhere in Snowdonia.
The ground underfoot is mixed - grass, heather, and boggy patches that'll test your boot-breaking-in credentials. Allow a good three hours return from the car park near Machynlleth town itself. Gwerniago Campsite sits just a couple of miles away, making this a natural pairing for a park-based holiday. It's not the sort of walk you'd send children under eight on unless they're the hardy type, but older kids who've done a bit of hill work before will find it manageable and genuinely satisfying.
