Cragside Bunkhouse

The bunkhouse at Cragside sits within the grounds of one of England's most extraordinary Victorian estates, a few miles south of Morpeth in the rolling Northumberland countryside. It's a no-frills base rather than a destination in itself - you're here for the house and its 50-acre estate of rhododendrons, conifers and woodland walks, not for creature comforts. Think functional bunk rooms and shared facilities. Groups and walking parties make up most of the occupants; solo travellers less so.

What you get is access to proper grounds. The house itself - an industrial magnate's Victorian pile full of original Art Deco interiors and the country's first hydraulic lift - can be toured separately. The bunkhouse lets you stay on site and wake up to those views rather than driving back from Morpeth after an afternoon visit. Families appreciate the space to roam between visits; walkers use it as a base for tackling the local trails. The nearby caravan parks - Riverside Rothbury and Whitton Glebe are both excellent and close by - offer more comfort if you'd rather not rough it.

Allow a full day minimum if you're doing the house tour and exploring the woodland paths properly. The bunkhouse itself serves a specific purpose: cheap overnight accommodation for people serious about spending time here. It's not glamping, and it's not fancy. But if you're the type to be content with a warm bed and access to 50 acres of Victorian landscape design, it works.
