Crag Height

The walk up Crag Height from Dalton-in-Furness takes you through proper Lake District fell country without the crowds you'd find on Catbells or Scafell Pike. It's a genuine peak - 420 metres of limestone and moorland that rewards you with views across the Morecambe Bay estuary and towards the southern fells.

You're looking at roughly two hours up and back, depending on fitness. The path isn't technical, but it's steep enough in sections that you'll feel you've earned the summit. On a clear day the vista across to Barrow and beyond is genuinely worth the effort. Fair warning though: in wet weather the path gets boggy and you'll need proper boots.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. Families with younger kids might find the ascent a slog without the payoff of a lakeside view at the top. History types won't find much up there, but the surrounding area tells the story of Furness's industrial past - old quarries dot the landscape.

It's free, naturally. There's parking near the start if you're not staying locally, though spaces fill up on weekends. Best to go midweek or early morning.

Old Park Wood Caravan Holiday Park sits 5.8 miles off, which puts you within easy striking distance for a day's walking. Pair it with the lower fells and you've got a solid weekend without fighting the tourist machine.
