Crab Wood

Crab Wood near Crewe is a proper woodland walk, the kind where you can actually lose yourself for an hour without hitting a car park or a gift shop. It's ancient woodland - the sort of place that's been here long before the sprawl of Cheshire industry grew up around it - and the trees are genuinely tall and thick enough to make you forget you're close to a major town.

The woodland floor is soft underfoot, mostly, though it can get boggy in patches after rain. You'll find yourself walking between oaks and alders, with the occasional stream cutting through. The light filters through properly on clear days. There's not much in the way of dramatic views or heritage points - this isn't a heritage site with information boards - but that's rather the appeal. You're just walking through real forest.

If you're into woodland wildlife and plant spotting, you'll find something worth your time. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though it's not a manicured loop. Serious walkers might find it a touch compact - you can get through it in forty minutes if you're moving - but it makes a decent stop-off from Sunny Side Touring Park or The Willows Touring Park if you're basing yourself in the area.

Free to access, no gates or fees. Best visited in autumn when the woodland really shows itself, or early spring before the undergrowth gets too thick. Worthwhile if you're in Crewe and need some actual greenery that feels removed from things.
