Crab Tree Spinney

Walking into Crab Tree Spinney feels like stepping into something genuinely old - the kind of woodland that's been here for centuries, just east of Sandy. It's not vast, but that's rather the point. You get proper woodland atmosphere without needing to commit to an all-day hike.

The spinney is a mixed broadleaf wood with the sort of gnarled trees that make you wonder what they've witnessed. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right; autumn's decent too with fungi and colour. It's the kind of place where you actually notice things - bird calls, the particular smell of damp earth, the occasional deer if you're lucky and quiet.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, though don't expect marked trails or facilities. This is proper woodland rambling territory. Families with young kids might manage twenty minutes to half an hour before restlessness kicks in - it's not designed as an attraction with facilities, more as a genuine bit of countryside to move through. History types will appreciate it as part of the Cambridgeshire landscape, though there's nothing obvious on site to mark its story.

Free to access, naturally. Best visited autumn through spring when the ground isn't thick with summer vegetation and you can actually see where you're walking. It fits nicely with a wider park holiday - Cambridgeshire Lakes is barely two miles away, making this a proper woodland break between caravan time. St Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site is also close enough for a morning walk before heading elsewhere in the day.
