Cox's Meadow

The meadow spreads out flat and open just outside Cheltenham, the kind of place where you can actually breathe. Cox's Meadow is essentially a working landscape - grassland that's been managed for centuries, dotted with wildflowers depending on the season. It's not dramatic or showy. There's no visitor centre, no car park with a cafe, just space.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts get the most from it. The meadow proper is best in late spring and early summer when the flowers come through - you'll spot orchids, buttercups, and all manner of grassland plants if you know what to look for. Birdwatchers tend to have a field day too, particularly for warblers and skylarks. Families with young kids might find it a bit dull after twenty minutes, truth be told - it's not a playground, it's a proper working field.

Access appears to be free and you can walk through, though it's worth checking locally in Cheltenham before you go as details are thin on the ground. Allow an hour if you're serious about it, half that if you just fancy a stroll. Best visited in dry weather - it gets boggy.

It works well as a morning walk if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Coxhorne or Big Skies, then you can head into Cheltenham proper afterwards for lunch. Don't expect manicured gardens or marked trails. This is the Cotswolds as farmers actually use it.
