Cowshaw Hill

The walk up Cowshaw Hill rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb feel instantly worthwhile. It's a proper fell rather than a gentle stroll - steep enough to get the heart going, but nothing that demands technical skill or specialist kit.

From the summit you're looking out across the Pennines with Kirkby Stephen visible in the valley below. On a clear day the sight lines stretch for miles. The fell itself is moorland - bracken, grass, the occasional limestone outcrop - so it's exposed. Bring a windproof even when it looks calm.

This works well for fit walkers and anyone wanting something a bit more challenging than a park walk. Kids aged ten and up who enjoy hiking will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the ascent a slog. The whole thing takes about two hours from Kirkby Stephen, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

The weather in the Pennines turns fast though, so check conditions before you head out. Spring and autumn are decent, but summer gives you longer daylight if you're planning an evening walk.

The terrain is boggy in places after rain, so proper boots matter. It's free to visit and there's no set opening hours - you simply park near the trailhead and go. Straightforward fell walking, nothing fancy.
