Cowleaze Copse

A small woodland patch between Swindon and the Cotswolds proper, Cowleaze Copse is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The trees - mostly beech and oak - create that proper English forest feel without requiring a full day's commitment. It's a quick walk rather than a destination in itself, maybe thirty to forty minutes to explore the paths properly.

Walkers will appreciate the quiet. It's not dramatic or particularly well-known, which means you won't be navigating crowds of Instagram hunters. The canopy gets thick in summer, offering decent shelter on warmer days. Winter reveals more of the woodland structure, and spring brings bluebells if you time it right. There's nothing manicured about it - this feels like actual working forest, not a visitor attraction dressed up for the cameras.

It works best as a leg-stretcher if you're based at Park Farm Campsite nearby - they're only fifteen minutes away - or as a break if you're heading towards Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park further west. Kids won't get bored if they're into exploring, but they might find it a touch unremarkable compared to somewhere with more dramatic features. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though it's worth checking locally before visiting. Best visited outside peak summer when the paths are less muddy and the woodland less claustrophobic.
