The approach to Cowesby Hall takes you down a proper country lane just outside Thirsk, and the first thing you notice is how the place just sits there - solid, confident, no fuss. It's a manor house that's been doing its thing for centuries, and you can feel that weight of time the moment you arrive.

What you get here depends on access at the time of your visit, as opening arrangements aren't always straightforward. When you can get in, you're looking at period rooms, the bones of a working country estate, and grounds that give you a sense of how landed families actually lived rather than how they wanted to appear in portraits. It's not a grand performance like Chatsworth - it's more intimate, more real.

Walking types and anyone interested in Yorkshire's social history will find it worthwhile. Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet unless the house is running special events. You'd want to ring ahead to check what's on and whether visits are possible that day.

Stay at either Hillside Caravan Park just a mile or so down the road, or go for Cote Ghyll a few miles further out if you want something larger. Both are solid bases for exploring the region. From Cowesby you can walk into Thirsk itself - the market town's proper charming - or use it as a starting point for exploring the North York Moors. Allow a couple of hours if the hall's open, longer if you're planning to walk the grounds properly.
