Cowage Grove

Ancient woodland doesn't come much more atmospheric than Cowage Grove. This pocket of old-growth forest sits just outside Malmesbury and feels genuinely removed from the world - all gnarled oaks, dense undergrowth, and that particular quiet you only get when trees have been standing for centuries.

It's a walker's spot, really. The paths wind through the wood at an easy pace, and there's enough variety in the terrain to keep things interesting without being knackering. You're looking at maybe ninety minutes to two hours if you want to do it properly, though you can potter about for longer if the mood takes. Spring's particularly good when the bluebells come through, though honestly any season works if you don't mind the mud.

This isn't a destination for small children who need constant stimulation - the grove is subtle rather than spectacular. But older kids who like exploring will find it properly engaging, and walkers after genuine woodland atmosphere will rate it highly. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong.

Both Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park and Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm make sensible bases nearby, putting you within easy striking distance. Free to access as far as most woodland is - no gates, no fees - which makes it a solid addition to a broader Wiltshire walking holiday. The Cotswolds aren't far if you want to combine it with market town wandering.
