Cowage Gorse

The gorse comes into its own in late spring when the whole place turns brilliant yellow - proper luminous it is, like someone's switched on a light inside the forest. Cowage Gorse is a modest woodland patch near Malmesbury, easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but worth the slight detour if you're staying at Burton Hill or Malmesbury Glamping and fancy a decent walk without the full Cotswolds commitment.

It's not a showpiece visitor attraction - no car parks, no facilities, no interpretation boards explaining the ecology. Just trees, gorse, the occasional stream, and the sort of quiet you actually want when you're away. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, and the paths wind through enough density that you feel genuinely among nature rather than just walking past it. Walkers will find proper value here. Families with younger kids might struggle since there's no obvious focal point or loop - it's more about the ramble than reaching somewhere specific.

The gorse bloom is absolutely the reason to come. Outside that window (roughly May to June), it's pleasant enough but unremarkable. Winter's muddy and can feel a bit bleak. Late summer onwards the yellows fade and it reads as just another bit of British woodland.

Stay at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park - only 1.3 miles away - and you've got an easy morning or afternoon on foot. The kind of place you don't spend hours at, but you'll remember the colour and the quiet. Well worth the walk if you hit it right.
