Walk into Cow Wood and you're immediately swallowed by tall conifers and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how much noise the rest of Yorkshire is. It's a proper forest - the sort where you can actually lose track of time, which sounds twee until you're standing in it and genuinely can't hear anything but birds.

The woodland sits within easy reach of Leeds, making it a solid option if you're staying at Rudding Holiday Park or Harrogate Caravan Park and fancy getting the kids away from the caravan for an afternoon. It's the kind of place where families can burn off energy on woodland paths without needing a formal trail system, though the terrain is uneven enough that you'll want proper shoes.

Walkers get the most from Cow Wood. There's no visitor centre or facilities - this is woodland in its straightforward state, which means you turn up, walk, and leave. Bring a map or download offline maps; the paths aren't signed particularly well. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about it, or just 45 minutes for a quick wander and a breather.

It's free to visit and open whenever daylight allows. Spring's best - bluebell season lifts the whole place - though winter walking here has its own appeal when the canopy thins out.
