Cousland Castle

The ruins of Cousland Castle sit quietly on a rise near Musselburgh, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. What remains is basically a sturdy rectangular tower with thick stone walls - the sort of place that whispers rather than shouts about its past. Figure on twenty minutes to half an hour if you're thorough, unless you're the type who likes to sit and sketch or photograph stone textures.

It's free to access and there's no formal opening hours to worry about, which is both the appeal and the catch - you get to visit when you fancy, but there's no facilities whatsoever. The real draw is combining it with a stay at one of the nearby parks. Drummohr Camping & Glamping Site is just over three miles away and offers proper comfort, while Haven Seton Sands is a shade further out. Either would serve as a good base for exploring this corner of East Lothian, where you can pair castle ruins with coastal walks and quieter country exploration.
