Courtfall Loch

You'll find Courtfall Loch sitting quietly in the far north, about twenty minutes from Thurso - proper remote, but that's rather the point. It's a decent-sized freshwater loch surrounded by heather moorland and low hills, the kind of place that feels genuinely untouched. The water is dark and still on calm days, reflecting the sky beautifully, and there's a real sense of solitude here that you won't get at busier Highland destinations.

The loch itself doesn't have formal facilities or marked trails, so it's more for people who want to walk the perimeter at their own pace or find a quiet spot to sit and think. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching - red-throated divers and golden eagles do turn up. Walkers will appreciate the moorland paths; it's not demanding terrain but proper bracing walking with genuine views across empty countryside.

For families, honestly, it depends. Kids who are content with a decent walk and spotting wildlife will love it. Those expecting visitor centres or playgrounds will be disappointed. Allow two to three hours to properly explore the loch shore without rushing.

If you're staying at Little Croft Highlands just up the road, Courtfall Loch makes an excellent morning outing. It's free, naturally, and best visited in good weather since there's no shelter. The autumn light here is particularly good - sharp and clear. It won't blow your mind with drama, but it's exactly what the Scottish Highlands should feel like.
