Corra Castle

The ruins of Corra Castle sit on a rocky outcrop above the River Clyde, about four miles south of Lanark - proper dramatic spot if you catch it from the right angle. What's left is mostly stonework from the 14th century, though it's been added to and knocked about over the centuries. You get the bones of a fortress that once mattered round these parts, with views down the river valley that justify the scramble up to reach it.

History types will find the bones worth picking over. It was a Douglas stronghold back when the Douglases actually meant something in these parts, and there's the usual Scottish castle tale of siege, loyalty, and land disputes. The site itself isn't heavily interpreted - no visitor centre, no gift shop - which means you're essentially wandering round old stones figuring out what was what. Kids might lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're the type who enjoy climbing rocks and imagining medieval warfare.

Access is free, and you can wander round most of the remains without restriction. Allow an hour if you're taking photos and reading what fragments of information exist on-site. The walk up from the road is short but can be muddy depending on weather. Late spring through early autumn is your best bet weather-wise.
