Coronation Meadow

Walking through Coronation Meadow on the outskirts of Chester, you're treading on grass that was specifically planted to mark Elizabeth II's coronation back in 1953. It's one of those understated British landmarks that doesn't shout about itself - just a meadow, really, but one with a proper bit of history woven into the soil.

The meadow itself is fairly modest. You won't find cafes or visitor facilities or anything like that. It's a genuine stretch of open green space where locals take their dogs, families have picnics, and walkers pass through on longer routes around Chester. The appeal is simple: it's peaceful, it's accessible, and if you're interested in mid-twentieth century Britain and how communities marked significant events, there's something rather touching about it.

It works best as part of a wider Chester ramble rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a walk around the city walls or a stroll down to the Dee. If you're staying at Manor Wood - the five-star holiday park just over two miles away - it's an easy addition to a morning out without breaking stride.

Going in spring or early summer when the meadow's actually flowering is worth timing for. Winter's less inspiring, if I'm honest. Allow twenty minutes if you're just passing through, longer if you fancy sitting down and reading the information boards. Kids will find it dull unless they're the type who enjoy open spaces and a bit of local history.
