Core Hill Wood sits just inland from Sidmouth, a proper slice of Devon woodland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet wander. The wood itself is modest - nothing like the vast forests you find further north - but it's dense enough to feel properly removed from the seaside bustle, even though you're never far from civilisation.

There's something satisfying about a wood that doesn't require a full day's commitment. You can work your way through the paths in 45 minutes to an hour if you're not stopping to identify every fern and moss patch. The terrain's gentle, making it suitable for families who've had enough of coastal walks but don't fancy a long slog. Kids won't get bored - there's enough cover and fallen wood to feel like a proper adventure, without the terrain becoming genuinely difficult.

Going in spring or early autumn works best. Summer brings the midges if you're unlucky, and winter can leave the paths boggy depending on rainfall. The wood's free to access, which is always a bonus when you're staying nearby.

If you're based at Oakdown or Cuckoo Down Farm - both just over 3 miles away - Core Hill Wood is a sensible short outing without needing to drive to somewhere bigger like Ladram Bay. It bridges that gap between a morning on the beach and lunch back at the caravan. Not spectacular, but dependable and genuinely pleasant.
