Cooper Thompson Rescue Aviary

The rescue aviaries at Cooper Thompson are run by volunteers who actually care about the birds rather than the gift shop. You'll find yourself in Christchurch, Dorset, watching injured raptors and waterfowl get a second chance - some will be released back into the wild, others have permanent homes here. It's not a traditional zoo. There are no crowds, no concession stands pushing overpriced ice cream, just people who've dedicated themselves to mending broken wings.

Walking around, you'll spot everything from buzzards to barn owls, all recovering from whatever human or natural disaster brought them in. The enclosures are functional rather than flashy, which somehow makes the whole thing feel more genuine. Kids get genuinely engaged here because the staff actually talk about rehabilitation rather than rattling off facts from a script.

A couple of hours is the right amount of time - it's not vast, and you'll have seen the birds and absorbed the mission without feeling rushed or bored. The aviary operates on donations, so bring a few quid to chuck in the box. Spring and early summer are best when young birds are being prepared for release.
