Cookworthy Knapp

You'll spot Cookworthy Knapp as a modest granite outcrop rising from the moorland just outside Okehampton, nothing fancy but proper rewarding if you've got a pair of boots on. The walk up takes twenty minutes or so depending on fitness, and the views across Dartmoor once you're there are genuinely good - wide open moorland rolling away in all directions, the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people bother with Devon in the first place.

It's a straightforward ascent rather than a technical climb, which means families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the scramble at the top a bit much. Walkers love it because it slots easily into a longer Dartmoor loop, and the rock itself has a bit of history - named after William Cookworthy, an 18th-century chemist and china maker from these parts. Worth thirty quid to know that while you're standing up there catching your breath.

Go on a clear day. Mist rolls in fast on Dartmoor and you'll lose everything. Early morning is best for both views and avoiding other people. Free to access, takes maybe an hour total including the walk and a proper look around, and it combines well with a stay at Wolf Wood Treehouses just five miles away if you want to make a day of exploring the moor.
