Connaught Park

The chalk cliffs around Dover get all the attention, but slip inland to Connaught Park and you'll find something quieter - a proper nature reserve that feels removed from the coastal chaos. It's the kind of place where you might spot kestrels overhead and wildflowers doing their thing across open grassland, depending on the season.

This is working land, essentially. Managed for wildlife rather than manicured for visitors, which means it works best for people who actually enjoy a walk without needing a cafe at the end of it. Families with young kids might find it a bit lacking - there's no playground infrastructure, no visitor centre, just the reserve itself. But if you've got older children who can manage a proper countryside walk, or you're the type who comes alive counting butterflies and listening for bird calls, you'll get on with it fine.

The reserve sits maybe twenty minutes inland from Dover, making it a sensible add-on if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Parkdean Resorts St Margaret's Bay or Hawthorn Farm. Pair it with a coastal walk to the cliffs, and you've got a decent day sorted without fighting for parking.

Head there in spring or summer when the flowers are up. Bring binoculars if you're that way inclined. The admission situation isn't entirely clear, but most nature reserves either run free or charge a quid or two. Allow a couple of hours for a proper mooch around.
