Connange Plantation

The forest at Connange is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for, and that's rather the point. It's a proper working plantation - commercial woodland in the Aberdeenshire Highlands where the trees do an actual job rather than simply existing for Instagram. Walking through it feels different from the manicured forest parks you'll find elsewhere. The paths are straightforward enough, winding through tall conifers with occasional clearings that give you views out towards the surrounding moorland. In winter, it's almost austere; in late spring and early summer, the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely.

This is walkers' territory, not a destination for those wanting café stops and interpretive signs. You're looking at a solid two to three hours to properly explore without rushing. The nearest proper facilities are back in Buckie, about twenty minutes' drive south, so come prepared with water and something to eat if you're making a day of it.

For a holiday based at Greencraig Pods just two miles away, it's a natural fit - a proper leg-stretcher that doesn't require booking ahead or paying entry fees. Families with older children who can handle uneven terrain and won't need entertainment every five minutes will get on fine here. Younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first mile. Photographers and birders often rate it highly; there's genuine woodland wildlife if you know how to spot it. Go midweek in autumn or early winter for peace and quiet.
