Community Orchard

The Community Orchard just outside Chipping Norton is the sort of place locals fiercely protect and visitors stumble upon by accident - which is exactly how it should be. This is a proper working nature reserve where fruit trees grow in loose rows, wildflowers crowd the margins, and the whole thing feels less manicured garden and more genuine habitat being left to get on with it.

You're looking at apple trees mainly, some heritage varieties that taste nothing like supermarket stock, plus the wildlife that comes with them. Bees, birds, the odd badger if you're lucky. The paths are straightforward, muddy in winter, and there's no kiosk or visitor centre nonsense. Just trees, space, and quiet.

It's brilliant for families who want their kids to understand where food actually comes from without the theme park treatment. Walkers use it as a link between other local routes. Even serious naturalists find something worth recording in the bird and insect lists. Give it an hour, maybe two if you're the sitting-on-a-bench type.

Admission details are thin on the ground online - best rung ahead or checking when you're based at one of the nearby parks. Cotswold Hills Country Park sits less than two miles away, as does the Chipping Norton Camping site, so it slots neatly into a longer stay exploring the wider Cotswolds network. Peak visiting is spring through early autumn, though winter here has its own appeal if you don't mind the mud.
