Comberton Recreation Ground

The open meadow just east of Cambridge where locals actually go rather than heading to the honeypot city centre. Comberton Recreation Ground is a straightforward nature reserve - grassland, some trees, the River Cam running nearby - and that's rather the point. No visitor centre, no ticketing kiosk, no interpretive panels. Just proper countryside on the edge of the city.

It's excellent for a family walk, especially if you're staying nearby at Shepreth Mill and want to stretch your legs without faff. The flat terrain suits younger kids and buggies. Birdwatchers will find it decent for winter visitors - snipe, various ducks, and if you're lucky, the occasional kingfisher. The Cam path itself offers a longer ramble if you fancy it. Allow anything from 45 minutes for a quick loop to two hours if you're taking it slowly.

Timing matters. Summer weekends get busier and the grass can be long, which kids either love or find tedious depending on their mood. Early morning in spring and autumn works best - you'll see more wildlife and the light's better anyway. Free access and no official hours means you can show up when you want.

Worth the detour? Only if you're based east of Cambridge already, which you will be if you're at Shepreth Mill. As a dedicated destination from the city centre it's underwhelming. As a morning ramble when camping locally, it does the job completely fine.
